Community allotment activities starting on 3rd April 2010

Community allotment

Would you like to grow food on our community allotment? We’re looking for people to share our allotment site – we have two large plots, so there’s plenty of room for everyone. You don’t have to know anything about food growing to take part, just be willing to have a go. We’ll provide the site, the tools and anything else that you need to help you grow your own food there.

We’re also looking for experienced food growers to offer advice. Don’t worry if you can’t do the digging – we’ll be there to help.

The idea is that by sharing the community allotment, we can all learn from each other. We’ll also have some activities there throughout the year, so that other Growing Newsome participants can join in. We hope this will be a great way for us all to get together and find out how we can help each other.

We need to figure out the practicalities of sharing an allotment between us, so we’re having a meeting to talk about it. The community allotment meeting is on Saturday 3rd April from 10.30am to 11.30am at Newsome Scout Hall, Newsome Road South. Anyone who would like to use the allotment site regularly is welcome to come along to the meeting, as well as anyone who already takes part in Growing Newsome activities.

Straight after the meeting, we’ll all go and have a look at the allotment, which is on the Ashenhurst allotment site (access is via a footpath between numbers 67 and 69 Ashenhurst Avenue). We’re going to start things off by plating some potatoes and onions there from 11.45am to 12.45am. Any Newsome residents are welcome to come along and do some of the planting (you don’t need to come to the meeting first if you don’t want to). We only have bare earth so far, so it may be muddy (but hopefully not frozen).

If you’re coming to either the Scout Hall or the allotment, or if you have any questions, please contact us to let us know.
