Autumn & Winter 2011 events at Stirley Farm

Here’s some information from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust about events at Stirley Community Farm this Autumn and Winter:

 

Half Term Family Afternoon – Wednesday 26th October, 1pm to 3pm
Wrap up warm and help us to put the vegetable garden to bed! Learn how to protect winter crops from frost damage, how to store crops through the winter and be the first to plant fruit trees in our new orchard. Hot drinks will be provided. All ages welcome. Free event.

From November, there will be food growing events at Stirley Farm on the first Saturday morning of each month...

Plot Preparation – Saturday 5th November, 10am to 12 noon
Learn how to prepare your garden for the year ahead. Includes how to suppress weeds, how to feed the soil, how to make use of garden waste and get the most out of composting. Free event.

Planning a Food and Wildlife Friendly Garden, Saturday 3rd December, 
10am to 12 noon
Whether you have an allotment or back yard containers, we will show you some basics of garden planning, including design and what to grow when. Bring a sketch or photos of your growing space and we will try to help individuals. Free event.

Forest Garden Tree Planting – Saturday 3rd December, 1pm to 3pm
Find out about our Forest Garden, which is a way of growing food which mimics nature, is low maintenance and great for wildlife. Help us prepare the site and plant the first trees. Free event.

Christmas Crafts – Friday 16th December, 1pm to 3pm
Come to Hall Bower Chapel on High Lane to join the Stirley Farm team in making Christmas decorations from all natural materials. We’ll be making wreaths, table centre pieces and tree decorations for you to take home. Event charge: £4.

New Year walk, Saturday 7th January, 10am to 12 noon.
Family seed sowing, Saturday 4th February, 10am to 12 noon    .
Fruit planting, Saturday 3rd March, 10am to 12 noon.
