Can you spare an hour or two? We’re looking for new volunteers to join us at our community allotment. From sitting down sowing some seeds in our potting shed to doing some digging or helping with DIY tasks, there’s something to suit everyone. It’s a great way to learn and to meet people, or just to spend some quiet time outdoors.

If you’re interested in helping out, please come along to our Sunday morning gathering to celebrate Volunteers Week 2016. You can have a look around, join in some practical allotment activities to give it a try, ask questions, and meet other local growers.

Refreshments are provided and we have space under cover in case it rains.

Growing Newsome Community Allotment

Thank you very much to Simon Gregson for visiting our community allotment on Tuesday 28th July 2015. He came to see how we’ve spent our Lottery funding to make our community allotment easier for our volunteers to look after. We were also celebrating reaching the Finals of the National Lottery Awards – a huge achievement for our little bunch of food growers. Have a look at our Growing for All Seasons page for more details about our lottery-funded project.

Our thanks to Vicci Moyles from the National Lottery Promotions Unit for organising Simon’s visit, and to all the press and media who turned out on a rainy Tuesday morning to help share our story. Community Allotment Open Morning – 8th August 2015

We welcomed Corrie’s Simon Gregson recently – he came to see how we’ve spent our Lottery funding to make our community allotment easier for our volunteers to look after. But it’s not just TV stars who get to take the tour.

We all look after the allotment together, as none of us could manage an allotment on our own. We share in the planning, sowing and growing – then share out what we pick. We also use some of the produce for meals at our community events.

We are always looking for new volunteers. It’s ideal for anyone who wants to grow on an allotment but needs a bit of help, or anyone who has advice to offer to other growers. Please come along to meet us and find out more.

Bud sessions for carers at Almondbury Allotment

Staff and volunteers have been busy preparing the site along with Mary who has been keeping the garden growing.

Growing Works are providing a break for carers in the outdoor environment whilst allowing them to spend quality time with the people they care for.

Sessions at the accessible Almondbury Allotment are on Fridays from 10am to 12.30pm, starting on Friday 3rd July 2015.

It’s an opportunity to make friends with people who understand, build bonds with your loved one, have some time to relax and enjoy doing tasks together. It is also a great opportunity for volunteers to get involved and make a difference to people’s lives.

Volunteers are welcome too!

Growing for All Seasons

Growing for All Seasons is our National Lottery funded project to help each other grow food throughout the year, and throughout our lives.

We were awarded £7,967 of National Lottery funding through Awards for All. We have used the funds to improve the facilities at our community allotment so that it’s easier for our growers to look after. We have a new potting shed where we can sit down to sow seeds and do some potting on, and we have more raised beds that need less digging.

We have also helped our fantastic volunteers to gain confidence by providing training opportunities, including Level 2 food hygiene training and a one day fruit pruning course.

Together, the eight members of our Growing Group (who run the project) and a further two dozen fantastic volunteers are supporting our whole community with food growing – and lots more. We build and strengthen relationships between people through food. Between us, we have everything we need.

Growing Newsome is special because of the way that it encourages people to support each other. It’s difficult to put into words how inspiring I find this group of bolshy, down-to-earth gardeners who just get on and do things and take care of each other while they’re doing it. Their generosity and enthusiasm for life is both infectious and humbling.

We are proud to be Finalists in the 2015 National Lottery Awards. Please show your support for this amazing little bunch of food growers, whose impact on our community (and on me) has been huge.

Do you want to grow your own food but are not sure where to start? Do you fancy having an allotment but feel a bit daunted? Do you have a bit of spare time that you’d like to spend getting together with other food growers? Our community allotment could be just the place for you to get growing.

We’re having an open morning on Saturday 16th August so that you can drop in to have a look around and see how we’re getting on. It’s ideal for anyone who might be thinking about joining in, or for anyone who would just like to visit. Refreshments are available and everyone is very welcome.

If you’re looking for local volunteering opportunities, this is also a good day to stop by and meet some of the Growing Newsome volunteers. We have lots of opportunities for you to get involved, including:

• digging and planting
• cooking and sharing recipes
• DIY jobs at the allotment
• running stalls and activities
• providing transport
• giving food growing advice

If you’d like to come along to our open day, the entrance to the allotment is between numbers 67 and 69 Ashenhurst Avenue. Follow the path upwards to the green metal gates, then head towards the green shed.

Everyone is welcome to come and see how we’re getting on at the Community Allotment. Come along to meet the gardeners, see what’s growing, join us for a cup of tea and find out how you can get involved.

You can also find out about the work of Growing Newsome over the past year and hear about what’s coming up in the future.

If you’ve been thinking about taking part in allotment growing (or you know of someone who is interested) this is an ideal time to come along and see if the Community Allotment might be what you’re looking for.

If you have any suggestions for local projects and activities, or you want to tell us how Growing Newsome can help you, please come along to share your ideas. We’d love to hear from you.

Members of other groups are also very welcome to come along and find out more about Growing Newsome.
